Asparagus is a perennial herb that provides edible, above ground stalks during spring. While asparagus grows wild, those plants did not end up along roadsides and field edges by someone planting one-year-old asparagus crowns, but by seeds being carried and dropped by birds.
A Dodgeville woman was surprised to see a three-foot asparagus stalk in her perennial flower bed recently.
She couldn't imagine her garden asparagus spreading a hundred feet from her garden and then growing so quickly.

Knights Dismantled by Wildcats

At Wisconsin Heights on Saturday, May 16, the New Glarus softball team lost 8-1 to the Vanguards.
Batting-wise, Lydia Sprecher was one for three with a run; Kelly Fredrickson was one for three with a double; Grace Moen was one for three; Maya Kramer was one for three with one RBI; and Noelle Austin was one for three.
On the mound, Kramer went all six innings, giving up six hits and one earned run while walking four and striking out one.
A day earlier on Friday, the Knights faced off against Waterloo, being defeated 14-1 in five innings.

Knights Baseball Loses a Doubleheader to Wisconsin Heights

On Saturday, May 16, New Glarus baseball was shut out by Wisconsin Heights 4-0 in game one of a doubleheader.
Offensively, Jared Carney was one for three; Austin Schlueter was one for three; Gavin Binger was one for three; and Koner French was one three.
New Glarus only left three runners on base.
French pitched all seven innings for the Knights, giving up 10 hits and four earned runs while striking out six and walking five.
In game two, the Knights scored a run, but ultimately lost 6-1.

Raiders Host Sugar River Invitational

On Friday, May 15, the Sugar River Track and Field team hosted the Sugar River Invitational. The Sugar River boys team placed second with 122 points, just behind Lodi with 123.5 points. The girls team finished in third place with 99.5 points behind Columbus in second and Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg in first.
Senior Ryan Hayes took third place in the 100-meter dash at 11.69, and right behind him was junior Nick Smith in fourth place with a time of 11.74.

Monticello Track and Field Team Competes at SR Invitational

On Friday, May 15, the Monticello track and field team participated in the Sugar River Invitational at Belleville High School.
The boys team placed eighth among 13 teams while the girls team took 14 out of 15 teams.
Sophomore Max Hoffmaster, sophomore Bryss Shover, and freshman Austin Blumer ran the 100-meter dash.
Junior Andy Yaun took fourth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.37 while teammate Hoffmaster competed in this event as well.
Yaun then won the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.85, and senior David Ruegsegger ran this race as well.

Belleville Defeats Monticello

At Marshall on Friday, May 15, the Lady Wildcats were narrowly defeated, 11-7: an improvement from their last matchup where Belleville was dominated by the Cardinals 9-2.
The Wildcats had 11 hits with six earned runs.
Junior Ryley Helwig was two for four with two runs scored; sophomore Alli Kowalski was three for three with three runs scored and three RBI; senior Claire Johnsrud was two for four with three RBI; and junior Tara Hanna was one for three with a double and two RBI.

Monticello Baseball Falls to Barneveld

In game one of a doubleheader against Barneveld, the Monticello baseball team was shutout 10-0. The Ponies had two hits total.
Jake Pusel was one for two with a double.
Logan Marty hurled the ball the first three innings, giving up eight runs – two earned – and one hit while walking eight and striking out four.
Kolton Shulka then came in when he walked three and gave up two earned runs.
Travis McCoy pitched the last inning where he walked one and gave up zero runs and hits.
In the next game, Barneveld won, 14-2.

Wildcats Edged by Vanguards, 10-9

On Saturday, May 16, the Belleville baseball team was shut out in game one of a doubleheader against Marshall, 7-0.
Drew Shrader pitched all seven innings for the Wildcats, striking out one and walking four while giving up eight hits and six earned runs.
Offensively, Belleville was led by Jesse NcNamar going three for four; Nicholas Richter was one for four; and Kevin Zimmerman was one for four.
