New Glarus High School Choir to be Included in NBC 15 Holiday Program

The New Glarus School School Choir took the stage last week to be filmed by a television crew from NBC 15 for a Holiday Special that will air on Christmas Eve. The choir is directed by Justin Wilder.

Quilts of Valor to be Awarded to New Glarus Home Veterans

Veterans at the New Glarus Home and Campus will be presented a Quilt of Valor this year at the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the New Glarus Home MPR/Chapel on Wednesday, November 11th, at 1:00 p.m.

Gift of Community Committee Looking for New Members

Planning has started for the 2016 Gift of Community dinner, silent auction, volunteer recognition and volunteer of the year roast. The 15th edition of this event will be held February 2016. The silent auction and fundraising benefit the New Glarus Community Foundation, which then contributes $20,000 per year for community projects.

New Glarus Police Provide Safety Tips and Glow in the Dark Neckaces to Trick or Treaters

The New Glarus Police Department, along with our sponsors, the New Glarus Community Relations Fund and New Glarus Utilities, once again conducted annual Halloween safety program at the Elementary School. This year we provided Halloween safety tips to approximately 450 students in the elementary school. Officers visited each elementary class, speaking about Halloween safety and provided each student a Halloween safety trick-or-treat bag with different treats inside.

Kehrli Receives Honors

Arnold Kehrli was presented a Certificate and a 70-year membership emblem on October 24, 2015, at a family gathering. Arnold has been a member of the American Legion for 70 consecutive years.

Monticello Lions Promote Diabetes Awareness

The Monticello Lions Club is helping to promote Diabetes awareness. November is a great time to help combat this epidemic as it is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Each year, more than 1,100 Wisconsin residents die from diabetes and many more suffer disabling complications, such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and amputations. Much of the health and economic burden of diabetes can be averted through known prevention measures.

Monticello American Legion News

The Monticello Post #256 is 95 years old and I am writing what Legion members have done in all those years (as well as the Auxiliary).
The lake was started by a Legion member
The Monticello sign at the lake
Row of trees entering the village
The Gardens, which were all canary grass six feet tall and marsh
The Veterans Monument and Memorial in the Garden
Built a Legion home, only to be taken away by a few narrow-minded people (also a community center)
Put flags in every classroom in Monticello school
We participate in Government Day

Green Cares Food Pantry to Host Fundraiser

Please mark your calendar to attend the Green Cares Food Pantry Holiday Fundraiser on Sunday, December 6, 2015, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Barnaby’s Monticello House. The holiday party is a dressy affair, with sparkling wine, passed hors d’oeuvres, desserts and holiday music by Andy Yaun and Julie Ruegsegger. The cost is only $30 per person. Prepayments or cash donations can be sent to Green Cares Holiday Fundraiser, PO Box 2, Monticello, WI 53570. Participants are also welcome to pay at the door.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi Announces Funding for Veterans in 2016 Budget Proposal

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced additional funding for the County Veterans Service Office. County Executive Parisi doubled funding for Vets Ride with Pride in his proposed 2016 Budget to $30,050. In 2015, Vets Ride with Pride has issued approximately 550 31-Day bus passes to approximately 150 Madison-area disabled veterans. The program helps veterans get to doctors’ appointments, employment and other commitments.
