The Monticello Lions Club is helping to promote Diabetes awareness. November is a great time to help combat this epidemic as it is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Each year, more than 1,100 Wisconsin residents die from diabetes and many more suffer disabling complications, such as heart disease, kidney disease, blindness and amputations. Much of the health and economic burden of diabetes can be averted through known prevention measures.
Diabetes has become a worldwide epidemic. Approximately 387 million adults have diabetes. The proportion of people with type 2 diabetes is increasing in most countries. 77% of adults with diabetes live in middle income countries. The greatest number of adults with diabetes are between 40 and 59 years of age. More than 79,000 children developed type 1 diabetes in 2013. Can you imagine that every seven seconds a person dies from diabetes in the world? While type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, a healthy lifestyle is an important part of effective management of the disease. A large majority of people that have type 2 diabetes can help control their diabetes by healthy eating and exercising.
Now is the time to be checked for diabetes. For more information about diabetes email the Wisconsin Lions at lshelley@wlf.info or call WLF at (715) 677-4969.
