Consumer Advisory for Cottage Cheese

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP)—Division of Food and Recreational Safety is issuing a consumer alert for 4% cottage cheese made by Westby Cooperative Creamery located in Westby, Wisconsin. The presence of active alkaline phosphatase was discovered in samples during routine testing and may indicate that the product was not adequately pasteurized.

Green County Alzheimer's Walk to Hold Silent Auction

The Green County Alzheimer’s Walk is hosting a silent auction to raise money to support valuable local programs and services provided by the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW). The silent auction will be set up and available for bidding on Friday, September 9th, from 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., and again on Saturday, September 10th, from 7:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. The walk and the auction will take place at the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St, Monroe, WI.

Swiss Church Hosting Annual Kilby Supper

Mark your calendars! In tandem with the Oktoberfest celebration this year, Swiss Church will be hosting their annual 2016 Kilby Supper on Saturday, September 24th, with food served from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Dining will be at Swiss Church in Fellowship Hall. Carry outs will also be available again this year. Additionally, delivery service is also available for those unable to drive downtown to pick up your meals. Please contact the church office at (608) 527-2119 if you would like to make your reservation for a delivery.

New Glarus Receives Award at Wisconsin Department Convention

At the American Legion Department Convention in Middleton, Wisconsin, on July 16, 2016, New Glarus was awarded the National American Legion Post Excellent Award. Stuessy-Kuenzi New Glarus Post #141 received the National American Legion Post Excellence Award for their activities in the four pillars of service. These pillars of service include Veteran Assistance and Rehabilitation, National Defense, Children and Youth, and Community Service.

Open Houses to be Held to Discuss November Referendum Question

The Belleville School Board has voted to place a referendum question on the November 8th ballot that aims to address a number of the district’s needs. The board’s vote follows a multi-year process that included engaging a task force of community members and staff, studying facility needs, identifying options to better serve the needs of the district and the community, and conducting a survey.

Broadband Law Could Force Rural Residents Off Information Superhighway

<i>The New York Times</i> ran an article recently about laws in several states “that curb municipal broadband efforts and favor traditional cable and telecom firms.” It occurred to me that this is yet another effort on the part of the country’s landed gentry to stifle competition and line its pockets at the expense of the rest of us.
