Sugar River Youth Wrestlers Compete at Darlington, Oregon and Waunakee

On Saturday, December 31, 13 youth Sugar River wrestlers and their families traveled to Darlington to compete in their annual Coach Hackett Memorial tournament. Almost 300 wrestlers were in attendance with competitors from several states and many State Qualifiers in a variety of brackets and age levels! Tough competition all day.

Hospice Volunteers Needed

Hospice focuses on living fully to the end of life, providing care and support to patients experiencing a life limiting illness. Volunteers are an important part of the hospice team assisting in many ways, ranging from direct patient contact to administrative support.Those interested in working directly with patients provide companionship and support to patients, respite to families, and assist with errands, meal preparation or light housekeeping. Those who would like to provide administrative support can assist with clerical tasks, as well as fundraising efforts and special events.

Avalanche Record Losing Week

On January 2nd, the Monroe Avalanche Co-op hockey team traveled to play Milton at the Mandt Community Ice Arena. The Avalanche lost, 3-5.

Bantam A Takes First in Rhinelander Tourney

The Avalanche traveled to Hodag Country for the Bantam A Tournament January 6-8, and came home with the first place trophy! Leading up to the victory the Avalanche first took on a physical Wisconsin Rapids team, shutting them out 4-0. Hayden Roth put up two goals, assisted by Cade Janecke, Tessa Janecke and Anika Einbeck. During a shift switch, Ryan Molitor, surrounded by Rapids players, squeezed in a goal. Haley Knauf fired one for the blue line and Luke Kuberski tipped the puck for the final goal. The Avalanche outshot Rapids 51-17.

For inspiration, on the coldest night of 2017 thus far, Shawn Farrell and John Scheidegger (Hooterville-Express) sat near last season’s individual championship trophies, which were located by the entrance of Hooterville Inn. The cold blast of air that swept over Shawn and John each time a patron entered or exited Hooterville Inn was not enough to cool their hot hands as they became the fourth couple to record a perfect score (120 points) this season. They were also the only couple between Hooterville-Express and the New Glarus Cheese-Eaters to break the 100-point barrier.

Belleville Stomps Evansville

The Belleville Lady Wildcats hosted Evansville on January 3rd. After a commanding 35-18 lead at the half, Belleville stomped all over the Blue Devils, and won 58-38.
Grace Schulting and Rachael Heittola each scored 17 points to lead the team. Aimee Sies and Kalin O'Rourke contributed 6 points each.
On January 5th, Belleville headed to Wisconsin Heights. Trailing by only 7 points at halftime, the girls weren't able to keep up in the second half and lost to Heights, 60-78.

Knights Run Over Waterloo

The New Glarus Knights hosted Darlington on January 3rd. Trailing by 15 at the half, the Knights fought their way through the second half, and were only outscored by a single point by the home team, but couldn’t make up the deficit to win. The final score was Darlington 71, New Glarus 55.
Leading scorers for the Knights included Trevor Gassman with 12 points, Cullen Brooks with 11 points and Dishawn Gale and Jaden Kreklow both put 8 on the board.

Lady Knights Lose to Marshall

The New Glarus Knights girls basketball team hosted Marshall on January 5th. The Knights were down by 11 at the half and struggled during the second half to play catch up. They lost. The final score was Marshall 68, New Glarus 45.
Julia Barnaby led the Knights with 10 points, while Willow Lee put 9 points on the board and Lexi Krause scored 7 points.
The girls hosted Waterloo on January 10th and play at Wisconsin Heights on January 13th. They have an overall record of 6-6.

Ponies Win Two in a Row

The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team traveled to Waunakee on January 3rd to face Madison Country Day School in a non-conference match. After being down by 2 in the first half, the Ponies went on a 23-2 run during the last eight minutes of the half to pull ahead by 13. Madison Country Day didn’t fare any better in the second half, as the Ponies dominated and left Waunakee with an 80-63 win.
