Lois K. Wainwright, age 90 of New Glarus, passed away on Friday, January 25, 2019, at the New Glarus Home. She was born on May 14, 1928 in the Town of Brooklyn, Green County, WI, to her parents Raymond and Alma (Disch) Blum.

MARK STEINER

Mark Steiner, age 59 of New Glarus, passed away on January 23, 2019, at UW Hospital in Madison. He was born on October 1, 1959 in Monroe, the son of Marvin and Delores (Boley) Steiner.
Mark grew up in New Glarus and worked in construction for many years.
He is survived by his brother, Steve; friend and coworker, Paul (Betsy) Elsner; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A gathering will be held at a later date.
The Zentner-Beal Funeral Home of New Glarus is assisting the family.

<strong>Lauren Christen</strong>, Belleville, a senior Dietetics major, has received the University of Wisconsin-Stout Chancellor’s Award for the fall 2018 semester. The award is presented to students who have a grade point average of 3.5 or above.

Marion Urges Rural Homeowners to Test Wells

Hallelujah! In last week’s State of the State address, Governor Tony Evers declared 2019 The Year of Clean Drinking Water in Wisconsin. Of course, the Governor is preaching to the choir here in SW Wisconsin, where we recently learned that initial results from a tri-county groundwater study showed 42% of tested private wells are contaminated by bacteria and nitrates.

Visitor Guide Cover Unveiled

Peter Etter is representing New Glarus on the cover of the 2019 Visitor Guide. Saturday night, during the Chamber's Annual Dinner, Etter was recognized for all that he has done and continues to do for New Glarus. School Superintendent, Museum Tour Guide, President of the Swiss Historical Museum, Step-On Bus Guide, German Wilhelm Tell Performer, Festival Volunteer and so much more.

Nutrition Program Update

Effective January 1, 2019, the suggested donation for meals received from the Green County Nutrition Program will increase to $4.50/meal. With increasing costs from our suppliers we must increase the suggested donation to help fund the program.
Our program is funded using Federal and State allocations, donations from organizations as well as participant donations. Participant donations make up about 25% of our total nutrition program budget. We truly do appreciate any donation that is made as it is a vital piece to being able to provide the program that we do.

Sugar River Euchre

The Plumbers traveled to Harley Blue hoping to pick up their first win of the half. Chris Booth, Tony (The Cellar Dweller) Hoffman, Jerome Krantz and Tiny (Ron) Zander all bent 112 pieces of copper, but the Express had a straight run at the station to reach a top speed of 410, winning this one by 7. The Mounties, the other team looking for their first win of the half, played perfect host to the Hay Shakers, allowing all four Kleeman couples to pull more than 100 needles from the hay stack. It was Al Zimmerman and Steve Sponem finding the most needles with 114 to their credit.

Lady Wildcats Have Winning Week

The Lady Wildcats hosted Argyle on January 14th. Leading 33-28 at the half, Belleville outscored Argyle in the second half 35-16 to win the game. The final score was Belleville 68, Argyle 44.
Rachael Heittola poured in 23 points to lead Belleville, while Jenna Shrader, Jade Halvensleben, Sophia Grady and Ava Foley all scored 10 points.
On January 17th, Belleville played at Waterloo. No halftime score or other statistics were available at press time. Belleville won the game, 67-59.

Eagles Defeat Ponies

The Monticello girls basketball team hosted Barneveld on January 15th.
“We got down by a lot early,” said Coach Mark Gustafson. “We were able to chip away and get back into the game by halftime.”
The score at halftime was close, Barneveld 19, Monticello 16.
“We led by 10 with 9 minutes to go and then Barneveld caused us to turn it over and they went on a big run to end the game,” said Gustafson.
Alyssen Noriega led the Ponies with 13 points, while Abby Wicker scored 11 points and Claire Klossner scored 6 points.

Ponies Pound Panthers

The Monticello Ponies boys basketball team hosted Juda on January 17th. The score was tied early in the first half and then the Ponies went on a 20-5 run to close out the first half to lead at halftime, 24-9.
In the second half the Ponies stretched their lead to 27 points by the end of the game and won. The final score was Monticello 54, Juda 27.
