Beetles Released to Combat Invasive Purple Loosestrife Plants

On Lake Montesian in Monticello, a very pretty but aggressive invasive wetland plant, called Purple Loosestrife has just had a natural enemy released into it. The enemy is an insect, Galerucella, or cella for short, that has an exclusive fondness for the Purple Loosestrife plant. The WI DNR and University of Wisconsin-Extension have done careful research and proven that these insects are not a threat to other plants. They have been using these insects for over 20 years in Wisconsin to reduce the purple loosestrife's impact on wetlands.

Rededication of the Green County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Monticello

5:45 a.m., July 12, 2015. Unlike the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, which is best viewed the first time at night for reasons that can't be explained but deeply felt, the Green County Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Monticello is best seen in the first light of day.
What little sun there is has just started its rise, bringing with it the sounds of the early morning concert, performed by birds in the trees surrounding the monument in Monticello. In the burgeoning light, the stark monument slowly changes from almost black to its natural dark gray.
