Village of Monticello to Hold Public Hearing

The Village Board will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at Barnaby’s Monticello House, 149 N. Main Street, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The purpose of this public hearing is to discuss the proposed infrastructure improvements project on North Monroe Street and its associated cub and gutter and sidewalk assessments. This covers the area of North Monroe Street from the Village Park/Staedtler Avenue parking lot to the north village limits within the village.

Pony T-shirt Supports Green Cares Food Pantry

The Monticello High School FCCLA chapter is holding their annual t-shirt sale to benefit Green Cares Food Pantry. This year there are two shirt options – a blue tie-dye or royal blue. The profit from this t-shirt sale will be donated to Green Cares to purchase food and personal cares items to help fill their empty shelves. If you wear your shirt to the boys basketball game against Juda on February 16th, your admission is free. Also new this year, anyone who orders a t-shirt will be placed into a drawing to receive $20.00.

Growing Together

As many of you know, this year the School District of Belleville became a Project Lead The Way school. This new curriculum opens doors to students who want to explore the fields of engineering and the trades. Under the direction of Instructor Ed Neumann, we hope to grow the initiative from a high school offering to stretching district wide. In addition to our efforts, the community has pitched in to ensure the success of Project Lead The Way.

The Cat's Pajamas to Perform at Belleville High School

The Cat’s Pajamas, an a cappella vocal group, will be performing at the Belleville High School Auditorium on Wednesday, February 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. The concert will also feature the Belleville High School Vocal Jazz Group.
The Cat’s Pajamas was founded by Brian Skinner, who performed with the nationally acclaimed UW-Madison MadHatters. They have been touring the world since 2005 and were featured on season three of NBC’s The Sing-Off.

Bingo at the Legion

American Legion Duppler-Smith Post #460 is hosting Bingo on Sunday, January 31.  The doors open at 12:00 p.m., and Bingo will start at 1:00 p.m.  The Legion is located at 2 W. Pearl Street, Belleville.

Wisconsin Voters Need a Photo ID to Vote

In March 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for enforcement of Wisconsin’s 2011 voter ID law. This requires all voters to present an acceptable photo ID at the polls in the Spring Primary on February 16, 2016.

The Bank of New Glarus® and Sugar River Bank Branches announced Jane Phillipson’s retirement from the Board of Directors at their December board meeting. Jane served as a Director for both The Bank of New Glarus® and Sugar River Bank Branches and Bancorp of New Glarus, Inc. for 18 years.

JANICE E. FARMER

Janice E. Farmer, age 72 of Monroe, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at her home. Jan was born July 19, 1943, in Madison, the daughter of Alvan and Ruth (Michaels) Rothermel.
She attended Monroe High School and married Nate Farmer on June 23, 1962, in Monroe. Jan was self-employed as an interior decorator for 40 years. She had a passion for art and won several awards throughout the years. She loved to golf, having memberships at Monroe and Edelweiss Country Club, enjoyed collecting 45 rpm records, and taking the occasional trip to Dubuque.

Thursday, January 21, marked the sixth anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United vs. the Federal Elections Commission decision. This ruling declared that corporations are people, with the same Constitutional rights as humans, and that the money they donate to political campaigns is free speech.
