The Monroe Avalanche Co-op Hockey team traveled to Mandt Hockey Arena in Stoughton on January 21st to take on La Follette. Colby Smith scored the first goal in the first period, followed by a goal by La Follette’s Sam Hull, assisted by Nik Brendel. Tyler Johnson, assisted by Cade Martin, scored on a power play near the end of the first to bring the Avalanche up by one goal.
Tyler Johnson scored twice in the second period, assisted by Cade Martin and Riley Johnson on a power play, and the second goal was on an assist by Cade Martin. La Follette’s Darius Agard, assisted by Charlie Collinge, also scored in the second. At the end of the second period, the score was Avalanche 4, La Follette 1.
Cade Martin scored on a power play in the third period. La Follette also scored a goal.
The final score was Monroe 5, La Follette 3.
“We finally were able to put things together tonight,” said Coach Josh Smith. “We were shooting the puck well and were able to capitalize on the power plays we were given. The guys played well, now we need to get ready for Monona Grove this Saturday.”
At the Monona Grove game on January 23rd, which was held at SLICE, the Avalanche were held scoreless in the first period. The score at the end of the first was Monona Grove 6, Monroe 0.
Evan Byrnes scored at the end of the second period, assisted by Tyler Johnson. Monona Grove put up 5 more goals in the second.
Joe Wyss started the third period out by scoring a goal, assisted by Jared Cline and Colton O’Connor.
The final score of the game was Monona Grove 13, Monroe 2.
“We started off alright today, but one of our players got a five minute major for checking from behind and MG scored four goals before it was over and we never recovered after that. Next up is McFarland, at McFarland,” said Coach Smith.
Earlier in the week on January 19th, Monroe headed to LaBahn Arena to play against the Madison Edgewood Crusaders.
“We knew this one was going to be rough especially after Edgewood just beat Middleton. They looked very good tonight and are definitely a team to beat in the Madison area,” said Smith.
The Crusaders took the lead early, and were up by 8 at the end of the first period. By the end of the second period, the score was Crusaders 11, Avalanche 0.
The final score was Crusaders 13, Avalanche 0.
The Avalanche Co-op team played in McFarland on January 26th and will host Oregon at SLICE on February 5th.
