Swim Team Wins Last Dual Meet of the Season

“It was the last dual of the season and we knew it was going to be close,” said Coach Linda Moser regarding the meet at Milton on October 17th. “The girls swam focused and determined, and they came out on top by 2 points!” The final score of the meet was Monroe/New Glarus 86, Milton 84.
“The girls finish the conference dual season with a 6-2 record,” explained Moser. “The best record this team has had in years. MNG placed first in only five of the 11 events, but they stayed strong in the middle finishes and that is what helped them to come out on top. There were many PRs tonight!”
All three relay teams placed first. The 200 Medley Relay team, consisting of Mekenzie Hammer, Francesca Schiro, Grace Keith and Cammi Ganshert, won their relay with a time of 2:00.10. The 200 Free Relay was won by the team of Cammi Ganshert, Emily Meritt, Megan Benzschawel and Madelyn Hammer, with a time of 1:50.55. The team of Mekenzie Hammer, Nina Schiro, Francesca Schiro and Madelyn Hammer won the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:51.13.
Madelyn Hammer and Francesca Schiro had the only individual first place finishes for the team. Hammer won the 100 Free with a time of 55.38 and Schiro won the 50 free with a time of 27.60.
Second place finishes included Mekenzie Hammer in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.95, Cammi Ganshert in the 50 Free with a time of 27.99, Grace Keith in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:07.08, Nina Schiro in the 500 Free with a time of 5:52.82, Mekenzie Hammer in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:00.32 and Francesca Schiro in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:19.13.
Earlier, on October 10th, the team swam at McFarland. The JV score was McFarland 106, Monroe/New Glarus 27, and the Varsity score was McFarland 113, Monroe/New Glarus 57.
The team of Mekenzie Hammer, Madelyn Hammer, Grace Keith and Francesca Schiro placed second in the 200 SC Meter Medley Relay with a time of 2:09.14. Placing fourth, with a time of 2:21.19, was the team of Nina Schiro, Cammi Ganshert, Emily Meritt and Megan Benzschawel.
Francesca Schiro won the 200 SC Meter Freestyle event, with a time of 2:20.02. Anna Newcomer placed fourth with a time of 2:31.51 and Linnea Tabaka placed sixth with a time of 2:45.01.
Madelyn Hammer won the 200 SC Meter IM with a time of 2:32.47. Sister and teammate Mekenzie Hammer was right behind her in second place with a time of 2:33.85. Placing sixth was teammate Kayleigh Nesbitt with a time of 3:13.69.
In the 50 SC Meter Freestyle, Nina Schiro placed third with a time of 30.15. Placing fifth and sixth were Megan Benzschawel (31.69) and Kendra Wenger (31.83).
In the 100 SC Meter Butterfly race, Grace Keith placed third with a time of 1:13.70. Teammate Anna Newcomer placed fifth with a time of 1:20.66.
Placing second in the 100 SC Meter Freestyle was Madelyn Hammer, with a time of 1:00.85. Fourth place was Cammi Ganshert, with a time of 1:06.13, and Emily Meritt placed sixth with a time of 1:10.37.
Monroe/New Glarus swimmer Nina Schiro placed second in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle event, with a time of 5:07.06. Placing fifth in the event was Linnea Tabaka with a time of 5:55.34.
The team of Anna Newcomer, Grace Keith, Megan Benzschawel and Cammi Ganshert placed second in the 200 SC Meter Freestyle Relay with a time of 2:02.28.
Placing second in the 100 SC Meter Backstroke event was Mekenzie Hammer, with a time of 1:07.51 – just tenths of a second behind the first place finisher. In fifth place was Megan Benzschawel with a time of 1:18.14, and placing sixth was Kayleigh Nesbitt, with a time of 1:31.03.
Finishing the 100 SC Meter Breaststroke event in fourth place was Francesca Schiro, with a time of 1:28.56. Placing fifth and sixth were Cammi Ganshert (1:33.25) and Dee Delforge (1:37.36).
Placing second in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle Relay event was the team of Mekenzie Hammer, Nina Schiro, Francesca Schiro and Madelyn Hammer. They finished in a time of 4:18.15. In fourth place was the team of Anna Newcomer, Linnea Tabaka, Emily Meritt and Grace Keith, who finished with a time of 4:47.81.
At the Hillmen Invite at UW-Platteville on Saturday, October 21st, the team placed third with 33.50 points. Monroe/New Glarus will face the top two teams from the invite, Baraboo and Sauk Prairie, at sectionals.
“The girls showed up strong and determined,” said Coach Moser. She added that they had 16 PRs for the day.
Starting the day off strong was the 200 Medley Relay team of Mekenzie Hammer, Madelyn Hammer, Grace Keith and Cammi Ganshert. They finished third, with a PR time of 1:58.17.
Mekenzie Hammer had two first place finishes. The first was in the 200 IM with a time of 2:18.47, and the second was in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 59.45.
Francesca Schiro had two new PR times. Schiro placed second in the 200 Free with a time of 2:07.72 and repeated that placing in the 100 Free with a time of 57.54.
Placing third in the 200 IM event was Madelyn Hammer, with a time of 2:22.46.
Posting a PR time of 1:52.07 was the 200 Free Relay team of Grace Keith, Emily Meritt, Megan Benzschawel and Cammi Ganshert. They finished fifth.
Placing second in the 400 Free Relay was the “sister relay” team of Mekenzie Hammer, Nina Schiro, Francesca Schiro and Madelyn Hammer. They finished with a time of 3:53.03.
“A big part of scoring more than in the past were the B relays,” commented Coach Moser. “They came through with placings much higher than in past years.”
With a PR time of 2:07.57, the 200 Medley Relay team of Nina Schiro, Francesca Schiro, Anna Newcomer and Megan Benzschawel placed ninth.
The 200 Free Relay team also posted a PR, with a time of 1:59.20 and a tenth place finish. That team consists of Kendra Wenger, Kayleigh Nesbitt, Laurel Houston and Anna Newcomer.
In the 400 Free Relay, the team of Grace Keith, Emily Meritt, Megan Benzschawel and Cammi Ganshert placed sixth with a time of 4:07.49.
The last Badger South Conference meet of the regular season for Monroe/New Glarus is at Monona Grove on Saturday, October 28th. “We are up for the challenge!” exclaimed Moser.
