Open House for the Brooklyn Area Historical Society

The Brooklyn Area Historical Society is hosting its 7th Annual Open House on Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., at the Community Building in Brooklyn; the presentation starts at 1:30 p.m.
The theme this year is Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of WWI. Our event features a presentation by Russell Horton from the WI Veteran’s Museum and a Travel Trunk containing all the items a soldier would have carried into battle. Our members will give short talks on unique stories of local WWI Veterans, why they are called “Dough Boys,” what sacrifices did those at home experience, the beginning of Uncle Sam and more. The American Legion formed in 1919, and Brooklyn’s Post will have a display. There will be a museum like display of photos, documents and artifacts of Brooklyn and the area history, featuring new acquisitions in 2017.
We look forward to the 2018 release of a book by Wisconsin H.S. Press from author Carrie Meyer and will have information available. Ms. Meyer’s book is about three boys from Green County and their WWI War letters home, including Otis O’Brien from Brooklyn. The author is a professor of economics at George Mason University.

Also for sale will be the new “Historical Sites in Brooklyn” walking brochure and vintage postcards. Following the program they will be serving refreshments appropriate to the time.
