Oktoberfest and High School Homecoming This Weekend in New Glarus

It’s almost time for New Glarus Oktoberfest! This year New Glarus High School Homecoming is also being held on the same weekend.
Oktoberfest, the annual festival coordinated by the New Glarus Chamber of Commerce, will kick off on Thursday, September 26, and run through Sunday, September 29, 2019.
New this year is a Tug of War exhibition in Village Park on Saturday and Sunday. Teams from Canada, the Royal Air Force team of England, and the Leo’s of Northern Ireland will all be competing, as well as teams from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa.
Homecoming has had events at the school all week.
<strong>Thursday Homecoming</strong>
On Thursday, September 26: 5:00 p.m., JV soccer against Watertown Luther Prep; 5:00 p.m., middle school volleyball against Monticello; 6:45 p.m., Varsity soccer against Watertown Luther Prep.

<strong>Thursday Oktoberfest</strong>
Thursday, September 26: 7:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., Polka music by the Steve Meisner Band. 8:30 p.m., King and Queen Contest. You could be our Oktoberfest royalty for the weekend! Cash prizes, free beer and bragging rights will be awarded to the King and Queen, so dress in your best Oktoberfest attire and let the people be the judges!

<strong>Friday Homecoming</strong>
On Friday, September 27: 1:30 p.m., is the Homecoming Parade lineup. The parade leaves the high school at 2:00 p.m. In case of rain, indoor parades will be held at the middle school at 1:30 p.m. and the elementary school at 2:30 p.m. (decision to be made by 12:30 p.m.).
The New Glarus Homecoming parade will begin at the New Glarus High School on 2nd Street and travel north to 14th Avenue where it will take a right and travel east for one block then take a left turn on to 1st Street and continue northbound. When the parade reaches 8th Avenue, it will take a right and travel one block east to Railroad Street, where it will take a left. The parade will continue northbound until 4th Avenue where it will take a left and end at New Glarus Village Park. 5:00 p.m., JV2 soccer game at Oregon; 7:00 p.m., Varsity football against Cambridge.

<strong>Friday Oktoberfest</strong>
For Oktoberfest, Friday, September 27: 6:00 p.m., Beer Tent, Food Stands, Craft Vendors and Farmers Market open. 7:00 p.m., Tap the Wooden Keg, an annual Oktoberfest event! New Glarus Brewing Company will be tapping a wooden keg of Staghorn Octoberfest. 8:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m., music by the Zac Matthews Band.

<strong>Saturday Homecoming</strong>
Saturday, September 28: 8:15 a.m., cross country at Fennimore; 8:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m., Homecoming Dance at the New Glarus High School, Grand March is at 8:30 p.m.

Noon-4:00 p.m., horse drawn wagon rides with pickup/drop off near Tofflers. 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., music by The Jimmys.

<strong>Weekend Street Closures</strong>
The following street closures will take place over the long weekend:
Closure of 1st Street, between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue, for festival tent from 12:01 a.m., Thursday 9/26 through 2:00 p.m. on Monday, 9/30.
Closure of 5th Avenue, between Railroad Street and 2nd Street, for vending from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, 9/27 through 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, 9/29.
Closure of 4th Avenue, between Railroad Street and 2nd Street, for tractor pull from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., on Saturday, 9/28.
Downtown residents are welcome to park in the Chamber of Commerce parking lot at 418 Railroad Street during the festival.
