On Tuesday, March 1st, the New Glarus Glarner Knights boys varsity basketball team hosted Waterloo in a WIAA Regional game. Leading 36-21 at the half, the Knights went on to win it, 79-48.
Dain Walter led the Knights with 29 points, while AC Strok scored 25 points and Carter Siegenthaler scored 7 points.
On Friday, March 4th, the Belleville Wildcats hosted Cambridge for a WIAA Regional game. Cambridge was seeded #9, while the Wildcats were seeded #1 for the tournament. Leading at the half 48-26, Belleville went on to win the game 87-60.
Also during the game, Carson Syse broke 1,000 career points.
Leading the Wildcats with 25 points was Trevor Syse, while Carson Syse scored 15 points and DeMarcus Conner and Anthony Nolden both scored 11 points.
The Knights also played on Friday night, at Deerfield, for a WIAA Regional game. New Glarus trailed by a single point at the half, 27-28, but applied both defensive and offensive pressure in the second half to hold the Demons to 26 points and score 45 of their own to win the game. The final score was New Glarus 72, Deerfield 54.
Leading New Glarus with 17 points each were Carter Siegenthaler and AC Strok, while Dain Walter scored 16 points.
On March 5th, the Belleville Wildcats and New Glarus Glarner Knights met in Belleville to fight for the title of Regional Champions. Already a strong, decades-long rivalry, emotions were high on this night as the gym was absolutely packed and parking spaces were at a premium. The Wildcats and Knights met twice during the regular season, with the Wildcats winning both games. The halftime score was New Glarus 33, Belleville 25. After the two teams slugged it out for the entirety of the second half, the Glarner Knights came out on top, winning the game 70-61, and earning the Regional Championship.
The Knights were led by Dain Walter with 23 points, while AC Strok scored 20 points and Bryce Stampfli put 17 points on the board.
Scoring 13 points to lead the Wildcats was Trevor Syse, while Kaden DeSmet scored 10 points and DeMarcus Conner scored 9 points.
The Knights will play Marshall, who they defeated twice in the regular season, on Thursday, March 10th, at 7:00 p.m., at Pardeeville High School (location is subject to change).
