Home ›Hornets Sting Wildcats, Ending Their Season
June 9th became the last day of the Wildcats softball team’s season. They traveled to Richland Center for a Regional game and lost, 1-11.
“We made the almost 2-hour trip on a very hot day, winding our way along a detour,” said Coach Connie Wunschel. “Didn’t get much warm up before the game started, but the pregame looked alright.”
The Wildcats struck first, and only once. In the first inning, Micky Stampfl walked at bat, stole second base and moved to third on an overthrow from Richland Center’s catcher. Stampfl scored on CC Grefsheim’s base hit.
“CC would move to third on Kailey Prochaska’s base hit, but that was the closest we would get to scoring again. We only had four others reach base,” said Wunschel. “Meanwhile, the Hornets took advantage of eight errors and some balls dropping in the outfield. We could have gotten out of the first with no runs scoring, which might have kept the game in hand, but that was not to be. Guess we didn’t get off the bus ready and rarin’!”
The Wildcats had 3 hits, 1 each by seniors CC Grefsheim and Raina Nicholson in their final high school game, and 1 by Kailey Prochaska.
Prochaska took the loss at the mound, giving up 11 hits, 11 runs, 3 walks and with zero strikeouts.
“I thought she pitched pretty well, getting most of the batters to hit to our fielders, but the defense didn’t show up that night,” commented Wunschel.
The Wildcats ended their season 1-7 in conference, and 2-12 overall. They held their post season awards picnic on June 14th.
